LONDON, Apr. 11 -- Sterling Resources (UK) Ltd. has secured the Ensco 70 jack up drilling rig to further appraise the Breagh gas discovery on Block 42/13 in the southern part of the UK North Sea starting in July.

It will drill two wells: one on East Breagh and one on West Breagh. "The rig contract allows the flexibility to drill additional wells if considered necessary, based on the results of the above program," said Faroe Petroleum Ltd., a partner in the discovery.

Last November, Breagh tested as much as 17.6 MMcfd of gas during its appraisal from the Carboniferous reservoir perforated between 7,332 ft and 7,447 ft measured depth below rotary table. Sterling suspended the well that reached a TD of 8,047 ft as a possible gas producer and is currently negotiating a development plan with the partners.
The well encountered a possible gas-water contact in line with the original 42/13-2 discovery well giving a gross gas column of 460 ft.

The other partners are Grove Energy (UK) Ltd., Grove Energy (North Sea), and Encore Petroleum Ltd.
