US rig count increases by 39 units

US drilling climbed to an 11-week high with an increase of 39 rotary rigs to 1,802 working this week, up from 1,757 during the same period in 2007, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

HOUSTON, Mar. 10 -- US drilling climbed to an 11-week high with an increase of 39 rotary rigs to 1,802 working during the week ended Mar. 7, up from 1,757 during the same period in 2007, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

Land operations accounted for most of the gain, up by 38 rigs to 1,719 drilling. Inland water activity declined by 1 rig to 22. Offshore drilling increased by 2 to 61 drilling in US waters, including 60 in the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas' rig count jumped by 25 to 884 rotary rigs. Louisiana was up 11 units to 155. Colorado gained 5 to 115. New Mexico had 71 rigs working, 3 more than the previous week. Oklahoma and Alaska each added 1 rig for respective totals of 201 and 9. California's rig count was unchanged at 35. Wyoming's count declined by 1 to 71.

Canada's rig count decreased by 9 to 623 units drilling, up from 553 during the same period last year.
