Rig count rebounds to high for 2008

US drilling rebounded by 24 rotary rigs to 1,808 working this week, up from 1,650 in the same period a year ago and the largest number of active units so far in 2008, said Baker Hughes.

HOUSTON, Mar. 28 -- US drilling rebounded by 24 rotary rigs to 1,808 working this week, up from 1,650 in the same period a year ago and the largest number of active units so far in 2008, said Baker Hughes Inc.

Land operations led the increase with the addition of 25 active rigs for a total of 1,733. Inland waters activity dipped by 4 units to 15. Offshore drilling increased by 3 rigs to 59 in the Gulf of Mexico and 60 in US waters as a whole.

Among the major producing states, Oklahoma had the biggest weekly increase, up 8 to 213 working. Colorado increased by 6 to 123 units drilling. Louisiana was up 3 to 142. Texas and Wyoming increased by 2 each to 881 and 65 rigs, respectively. California was unchanged at 35, as was Alaska at 7. New Mexico was down by 3 rigs to 70.

The seasonal change in weather and temperature dropped Canada's rig count by 157 rigs to 171 still working, up from 149 during the same period a year ago.
