US rig count down by 8

US drilling activity declined by 8 rotary rigs to 1,755 working this week, up from 1,731 in the same period a year ago, said Baker Hughes Inc.

HOUSTON, Feb. 8 -- US drilling activity declined by 8 rotary rigs to 1,755 working this week, up from 1,731 in the same period a year ago, said Baker Hughes Inc.

Land drilling fell by 6 rigs to 1,677. Inland water activity was down 1 unit to 22, and offshore drilling declined by 1 to 56 rigs in US waters, including 55 in the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas was the only major producing state with an increase in its weekly rig count, up 13 to 872 drilling. Colorado was down 5 to 114, and Oklahoma had 190 rigs working, 3 less than the previous week.

Louisiana, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Alaska were down 2 rigs each to respective counts of 140, 72, 69, and 7. California lost 1 rig with 33 still drilling.

Canada's rig count increased by 5 to 598, still down from 641 a year ago.
