Feb. 14: Shell Oil Co. President John D. Hofmeister will discuss "Why America's Leaders Are Lagging in Implementing a Coherent National Energy Policy" at the National Press Club, 14th and F Streets NW, at a 10 a.m. newsmaker appearance.

Why it matters: The address by the chief executive of one of the nation's biggest major oil companies comes after several members of the 110th Congress sounded off after many majors reported record full-year profits. Crude oil prices have retreated somewhat recently, but many political candidates already are demanding that majors be taxed further to finance research and development of non-petroleum motor fuel alternatives. Hofmeister's last NPC address contained several good ideas that he put across well. This one deserves serious attention too.
