LONDON, Sept. 25 -- Enagas has contracted Saipem SPA and its joint venture partner Fomento De Construcciones Y Contratas SA (FCC) to construct two 20-in. pipelines off Spain that would deliver natural gas to the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Mallorca in the Balearic Sea. The work is expected to be completed by first quarter 2009.

One 123-km line will connect Playa Devesa on Spain's mainland to Punta de Cala Gracio on the island of Ibiza. The pipeline will lie in 1,000 m of water.

The second subsea pipeline, spanning 146 km, will connect Ibiza to Mallorca at San Juan de Dios. The line will lie in 800 m of water.

Saipem's scope of work includes project management and engineering, offshore survey, transport and installation, trenching and backfilling, and precommissioning. The Castoro Sei vessel will carry out offshore work beginning in early 2008 and completing in first quarter 2009.

Enagas plans to spend €490 million on the project overall, which includes the Montesa-Denia gas pipeline and a compression station in Denia.
