Alaska governor named IOGCC chair

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was selected to chair the 2008 IOGCC, replacing Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who announced Sept. 24 that he was stepping down from that post.

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 25 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was selected to chair the 2008 Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission, replacing Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who announced Sept. 24 that he was stepping down from that post.

Palin, previously the IOGCC 2008 chairwoman-elect, attended part of the IOGCC annunal meeting in New Orleans. This year, North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven is chairing IOGCC, which represents the governors of oil and gas-producing states and their appointed representatives.

Alaska joined the commission in 1957, and former state governors Steve Cowper, Tony Knowles and Frank Murkowski have all served as chairman of the organization in the past.

In other business, IOGCC held the first meeting of its international committee Sept. 25. International affiliates are Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia, Egypt, Venezuela, and Georgia of the former Soviet Union.
