Total unit lets platform contract for Ofon field off Nigeria

Total unit Elf Petroleum Nigeria signed a $520 million turnkey contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries for a production platform to be built for Ofon oil and gas field off southeast Nigeria.

HOUSTON, July 24 -- Total SA subsidiary Elf Petroleum Nigeria Ltd. (EPN) has signed a $520 million turnkey contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. for engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning of a production platform to be built for Ofon oil and natural gas field in 40 m of water 40 km off southeast Nigeria.

The 13,000-ton platform will have a capacity of 105,000 b/d of oil and 3 million cu m/day of gas. It is scheduled for completion by 2010.

A joint venture of EPN and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. will operate the platform.

The contract award is associated with EPN's plans to raise Ofon field's production to 100,000 b/d of oil from 60,000 b/d by yearend 2010 (OGJ Online, July 20, 2007). EPN's plan involves adding three drilling platforms, a processing platform, and a crew platform accommodating more than 120 people.
