HOUSTON, June 29 -- US drilling activity climbed slightly this week, up by 4 rotary rigs to 1,775 drilling, a new 21-year high, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
That compares with 1,666 rotary rigs working during the same period a year ago.
Land operations accounted for this week's gain with 1,675 rigs drilling, 8 more than the previous week. Offshore operations lost 3 rigs to 78 still working, including 77 in the Gulf of Mexico. Inland waters activity was down by 1 rig with 22 making hole.
The biggest increase among the major producing states was in California with a gain of 6 rigs to 39. New Mexico added 4 for a total of 86. Despite heavy rains in several parts of the state this week, Texas was up by 2 rigs to 827. Oklahoma and Louisiana lost 3 rigs each, for respective counts of 192 and 177. Wyoming was down 2 to 73. Colorado and Alaska lost 1 rig each to 109 and 6, respectively.
Canada's weekly rig count jumped by 26 to 231, down from 473 in the same period a year ago.
