HOUSTON, June 8 -- After hitting a new 21-year high last week, US drilling activity slumped this week, down 14 rotary rigs to 1,760 drilling, compared with 1,661 during the same period last year, said Baker Hughes Inc.
Losses were across the board, with land operations down by 10 units to 1,668 working. Activity in inland waters declined by 2 rigs to 21. Offshore drilling also was down 2, to 79 in US waters, including 78 in the Gulf of Mexico.
Oklahoma and New Mexico had the biggest loss, down 6 rotary rigs each to 188 and 77, respectively. Louisiana and Colorado each dropped 4 with respective counts of 171 and 102. Texas' weekly rig count dipped by 3 with 840 rotary rigs working. Wyoming was unchanged at 79. California and Alaska each added 1 rig, with respective counts of 32 and 9
Canada's weekly rig count jumped by 90 to 226 rotary rigs drilling, down from 443 during this period a year ago.
