HOUSTON, Mar. 2 -- Weatherford International Ltd. has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with UK-based fluid descaling system companies Hydropath Ltd. and Clearwell International.

Through the agreement, signed Nov. 15, 2006, Weatherford now owns the exclusive rights in the upstream oil and gas market to a patented chemical-free treatment technology designed to prevent scale and paraffin from depositing in the wellbore and on associated surface equipment.

Weatherford said the device can be easily installed at the wellhead without interfering with well production. The device works by emitting a radio frequency signal down the wellbore from the surface and causes scale to form in solution and be carried away with the produced fluids rather than adhere to the piping walls.

The technology was tested with 13 different companies in six different regions around the world.
