WASHINGTON, DC, Mar. 8 -- Jeffrey D. Jarrett has resigned as assistant secretary for fossil energy at the US Department of Energy to become executive director of the Coal-Based Generation Stakeholders Group, an organization of electric utilities and cooperatives, coal producers, and coal-hauling railroads.
Energy Sec. Samuel W. Bodman said Jarrett, who became DOE's fossil energy chief on Jan. 3, 2006, "has overseen the impressive progress made in our high-priority carbon sequestration research and development program, and on the FutureGen project to build and demonstrate a virtually emissions free coal-based power plant by the year 2012. At the same time he has overseen the continuing expansion of the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve."
DOE has not indicated who will direct its fossil energy program while Jarrett's successor is found.
