Qatar Gas lets LNG carrier construction contract

Qatar Gas Transport Co. has awarded South Korean shipbuilders Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine orders totaling $2.1 billion for the construction of eight LNG carriers.

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 6 -- Qatar Gas Transport Co. (QGTC) has awarded South Korean shipbuilders Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering orders totaling $2.1 billion for the construction of eight LNG carriers to transport its gas to Europe and the US.

SHI said it won a $1.14 billion contract to build four carriers for QGTC, with delivery due by February 2010, while Daewoo said it won a $984.6 million order to build four carriers by December 2009. The tankers will be used to export some 8 million tonnes/year of LNG produced by Qatargas 3, a joint venture of Qatar's government and ConocoPhillips.
