LONDON, Jan. 23 -- No hydrocarbons were found in the primary target zone of the vertical Pomboo-1 exploration well in Kenya, Woodside Petroleum Ltd. said Jan. 23.

The offshore well, in 2,200 m of water, was drilled on Block L-5 in the Lamu basin. The primary objective of the well was between 4,685 m and its 4,887 m TD.

The well encountered more than 200 m of "moderate-to-good quality reservoir sandstones," Woodside said, and it found extensive Cretaceous sandstones as the partners had expected.

The Chikyu deepwater drillship, owned by Japanese Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology, is preparing to plug and abandon the well.

The joint venturers are operator Woodside Energy (Kenya) Pty. Ltd. 30%, Repsol Exploracion SA 20%, Global Petroleum Ltd. 20%, and Dana Petroleum (E&P) Ltd. 30%.
