HOUSTON, Jan. 18 -- Northern Petroleum Nederlands BV will use the DrillTec GUT GMBH Synergy 1 rig to drill an appraisal and development sidetrack in Ottoland oil field in the Netherlands.

The existing, nearly vertical Ottoland well, drilled in 1987 targeting Triassic Bunter sandstone, flowed 211 b/d on test from a 14-m interval.

The nearly horizontal Ottoland-1z sidetrack will develop 600 m of pay and is expected to achieve "significantly higher flow rates," said Northern Petroleum.

It's the first of six development wells the company plans in the Netherlands and its first operated well in the country. It has an option to use the Synergy 1 rig for a well after the Ottoland 1z.

A Royal Dutch Shell unit operated the Ottoland-1 well until 18 months ago and retains an interest in the sidetrack.
