LONDON, Dec. 15 -- Construction can begin on the LionGas LNG import terminal in the Port of Rotterdam under a permit recently granted by the City of Rotterdam (OGJ, Aug. 21, 2006, Newsletter).
Under the first construction phase, project sponsor 4Gas will build one jetty, three storage tanks, and facilities to regasify 6.57 million tonnes/year of LNG beginning in 2010. The terminal's capacity can be doubled under second phase, which would add three tanks and a jetty.
A 4Gas spokesman told OGJ that it did not have a date for expansion, which will depend on demand. He declined to name potential gas buyers.
The terminal will be built on 25 hectares at the mouth of the Port of Rotterdam under a land-use agreement with the Port of Rotterdam Authority. 4Gas has also received a €40 million commitment from the port authority to develop an LNG-dedicated harbor basin at the site.
4Gas said: "LionGas is the only fully permitted LNG project in the Netherlands. The developments keep the LionGas project on target to start construction in 2007 and becoming fully operational in 2010."
