HOUSTON, Dec. 11 -- India's state-owned Oil & Natural Gas Corp. has outlined an exploration program in the northeastern state of Tripura to tap "massive" gas reserves, an ONGC executive told reporters in Agartala.

Gas production would supply industrial projects, including a proposed 740-Mw electric power plant in Palantana in south Tripura, said R.K. Marya, ONGC Tripura asset group general manager.

ONGC expects to drill 60 exploration and 14 development wells, Marya said. He did not outline an anticipated timetable for the drilling program.

The power plant, scheduled for commissioning by 2009, is a joint venture involving the Tripura government and ONGC, Marya said Dec. 10. The JV was incorporated about 18 months ago.

ONGC started drilling operations in Tripura in 1972 and has explored 11 of 19 structures found there.
