US rig count slips slightly

US drilling activity slipped slightly the week ended Nov. 3, down by 5 units, with 1,739 rotary rigs working, said Baker Hughes Inc.

HOUSTON, Nov. 3 -- US drilling activity slipped slightly the week ended Nov. 3, down by 5 units, with 1,739 rotary rigs working, said Baker Hughes Inc.

That compares with 1,496 active rigs at the same period a year ago.

All of the loss was in land operations, down by 5 rigs to 1,627 still drilling. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged at 22, and offshore operations held steady with 90 active rigs, including 87 in the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas reported the biggest decline, down 9 rigs to 792 working. Wyoming's rig count declined by 5 rotary rigs to 96. California and Alaska were down 1 rig each to 33 and 6, respectively. Louisiana's rig count increased by 6 to 198, while Oklahoma gained 3 to 190. Colorado and New Mexico increased by 1 rig each to 93 and 90 respectively.

Canada, meanwhile, jumped by 33 to 376 rigs drilling, down from 582 during the same period last year.
