HOUSTON, Nov. 15 -- Eni SPA signed a new gas distribution agreement with Russia's OAO Gazprom, enabling the Russian state-controlled gas giant to sell gas directly to Italian consumers. Previously, Eni distributed Russian gas.

Gazprom agreed to extend its supply contract from 2017 to 2035 in return for access to the Italian market, an Eni statement said. Plans call for Gazprom to gradually increase sale volumes in Italy, building up to 3 billion cu m from 2010.

The two companies also agreed to cooperate in gas transportation technology, with Eni technicians offering expertise to Gazprom. In addition, Eni and Gazprom agreed to jointly acquire oil assets in Russia.
