HOUSTON, Oct. 13 -- US drilling activity rebounded slightly after falling the two previous weeks, with 1,728 rotary rigs working this week, four more than the previous week and up from 1,482 during the same period last year, said Baker Hughes Inc.

Offshore drilling increased by 6 rigs to 94 in US waters, including a gain of 7 units to 91 in the Gulf of Mexico. But that was offset by a drop of 4 land rigs to 1,608 working. Drilling in inland waters increased by 4 rigs to 26.

Texas enjoyed the biggest gain among major producing states, up by 8 rigs to 799 working. Louisiana gained 3 rigs to 194. Other major producing states reported rig losses, however, with Oklahoma down 8 rigs to 178. Colorado and New Mexico each lost 3 rigs for respective weekly counts of 90 and 88. California's rig count was down by 2 units to 33. Wyoming and Alaska declined by 1 rig each to 107 and 6, respectively.

Canada's weekly count increased by 28 rigs to 477, compared with 534 working at this time in 2005.
