Petrobras contracts two newbuild ultradeepwater rigs

Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) subsidiary Petrobras America Inc., Houston, has contracted two state-of-the-art, ultradeepwater rigs for its drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

HOUSTON, Oct. 4 -- Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) subsidiary Petrobras America Inc., Houston, has contracted two state-of-the-art, ultradeepwater rigs for its drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Larsen Oil Co. has leased for 5 years its PetroRig 1 semisubmersible, which will be capable of drilling 35,000 ft wells in 10,000 ft of water, and Sevan Marine ASA is making available its SSP Sevan Driller for 6 years. It will be capable of drilling to 40,000 ft in water as deep as 12,500 ft.

Both rigs are under construction and are expected to start operations in the gulf in first quarter 2009.
