HOUSTON, Oct. 31 -- Sherritt International Corp., Toronto, applied in the quarter ended Sept. 30 for oil production from Majaguillar Block 9 on the North Cuba fold belt to be declared commercial.

Majaguillar, an oil field discovered in 1996 east of Cardenas, is expected to help oil production growth in 2007, Sherritt said (OGJ Online, Aug. 2, 2006).

Meanwhile, Sherritt drilled a 5,175 m horizontal well at Seboruco field in the third quarter that is producing 1,500 b/d of oil. The company said the technical knowledge should allow it to drill from shore pads to accumulations previously considered unreachable in the Bay of Cardenas.

As many as eight rigs were drilling in the quarter, four at Santa Cruz field and four at Canasi, Seboruco, and Yumuri fields (see map, OGJ, Jan. 10, 2005, p. 31).

Sherritt is drilling an exploration well at Playa Larga on Block 10 west of Majaguillar. San Anton, on Block 9 south of Majaguillar, is production testing, but early results indicate a limited reservoir.

Varadero West field's normal production decline eased, apparently in response to emplacement of an electric submersible pump earlier this year.
