US drilling activity declined by 10 rotary rigs to 1,744 units working the week ended Sept. 29, up from 1,483 a year ago, said Baker Hughes Inc. Land drilling led the decline.

HOUSTON, Sept. 29 -- US drilling activity declined by 10 rotary rigs to 1,744 units working the week ended Sept. 29, up from 1,483 a year ago, said Baker Hughes Inc.

Land drilling led the decline, down by 8 units to 1,633 active. Inland water activity declined by 1 to 22 units. Offshore drilling was down 1 rig to 89 in US waters, including 85 in the Gulf of Mexico.

Oklahoma and New Mexico accounted for the bulk of this week's loss, down 5 rigs each to 191 and 89 respectively. Texas's rig count increased by 2 to 790. Louisiana and California were up 1 rig each to respective counts of 199 and 34. Wyoming, Colorado, and Alaska were unchanged at 112, 96, and 6, respectively.

Canada had 353 rotary rigs drilling this week, 27 less than the previous week and down from 537 a year ago.
