US drilling continues to slip

US drilling activity continued to slip in the week ended Sept. 1, with 1,732 rotary rigs working, 24 less than the previous week but up from 1,447 a year ago, said Baker Hughes Inc.

HOUSTON, Sept. 5 -- US drilling activity continued to slip in the week ended Sept. 1, with 1,732 rotary rigs working, 24 less than the previous week but up from 1,447 a year ago, said Baker Hughes Inc.

As usual, the biggest change was in land drilling, down by 16 rigs with 1,615 still working. Offshore drilling declined by 7 rigs to 90 in the Gulf of Mexico and a total of 93 in US waters. Inland waters activity dipped by 1 rig to 24 drilling.

Louisiana reported the largest loss for the week, down by 8 rigs with 201 still working. New Mexico lost 5 to 88. Wyoming and Colorado were down by 3 rigs each to 106 and 92, respectively. Texas' weekly rig count dipped by 1 to 789, while Oklahoma was unchanged at 195. California and Alaska added 2 rigs each for respective counts of 32 and 8.

Canada's weekly rig count was up by 16 to 505, compared with 521 rigs working in the same period a year ago.
