HOUSTON, Sept. 6 -- The government of Congo (former Zaire) has awarded Tullow Oil PLC, London, a 48.5% operated interest in Blocks I and II in the northeastern part of the country.

The blocks lie along Lake Albert, where Tullow holds a 50% interest in Uganda blocks 1, 2, and 3A across the lake (see map, OGJ, Sept. 4, 2006, p. 56). Several large oil discoveries have been made on the Uganda side of the Albert graben.

The two Congo blocks total 20,000 sq km of acreage on land and in Lake Albert.

Tullow plans to begin technical studies on the blocks in 2006 and to gather 400 line-km of 2D seismic data in 2007. The seismic campaign will target potential extensions to the geological play types already identified in the region.
