HOUSTON, Sept. 14 -- Max Petroleum PLC, London, is completing for production a discovery on the E Block in the Pre-Caspian basin of Kazakhstan.

It has begun drilling a second well around the shallow Mak A1-X discovery. Drilled to 1,000 m TD, the Mak A1-X cut oil pay between 812 m and the oil-water contact at 835 m.

The well is producing about 200 b/d of liquid, of which 10% is bs&w and the rest 35º gravity oil similar to analogous production in the area. Max is building a temporary production facility to process the oil from Mak A1-X and future wells.

The second well targets the same reservoir, Zhana Makat A. On the basis of 3D seismic data, Max estimates areal extent of the reservoir at at least 2.5 sq km. It plans additional drilling in a program due completion in mid-November.

The company has identified two additional prospects on Block E.

It plans to drill the Zhana Makat E prospect after drilling is complete on the Zhana Makat A structure. It estimates areal extent of the undrilled reservoir at 1.5 sq km and expects to encounter hydrocarbons below 815 m.

Max estimates areal extent of the Zhana Makat D prospect at 3.5 sq km and expects it to be hydrocarbon-bearing below 1,320 m.
