HOUSTON, Sept. 1 -- Several independent producers are attempting to establish shallow, heavy-oil recovery projects in South Texas, Missouri, and Kansas.

The planned projects are known as Mega-West in Edwards County, Tex., Deerfield in southwestern Missouri, and Chetopa in southeastern Kansas.

Flair Petroleum Corp., Calgary, said it advanced an initial $700,000 toward the three developments and according to letters of intent has the right to acquire or earn an initial 30% working interest in Mega-West and 60% each in Deerfield and Chetopa. Formal agreements are pending.

At Mega-West, Flair Petroleum; Energy Finders Inc., Cisco, Tex.; and International TME Resources Inc., Dallas, estimate 1.29 billion bbl recoverable from Cretaceous Trinity sands on 17,300 acres via steam injection and radial drilling.

Estimates of oil in place on held acreage are 120 million bbl at Deerfield and 5 million bbl at Chetopa, Flair Petroleum said. The companies will use the same technology at those projects.
