HOUSTON, Sept. 13 -- BP PLC reported it will supply LNG to Gazprom Marketing & Trading Ltd., a unit of Russian gas giant OAO Gazprom.

The Gazprom unit will sell the cargoes in the Atlantic Basin. The first cargo of 135,000 cu m was loaded Sept. 13 onto the British Merchant vessel at Point Fortin, Trinidad and Tobago, for delivery to Cove Point, Md., BP said.

Additional cargoes will be supplied during 2006-07 and transported in BP-chartered LNG vessels to delivery pointed specified by the Gazprom unit.

BP's Vice-Pres. Anne Quinn of the gas and LNG division said, "As the world's largest gas company, Gazprom is potentially also a major supplier of LNG to the Atlantic Basin." BP seeks additional future LNG supply agreements with Gazprom, she said.

Gazprom's Deputy Chairman Alexander Medvedev said, "Gazprom is continuing to look at ways to increase its LNG portfolio."

Previously, Gazprom Marketing & Trading LNG Director John Hattenberger told participants at the annual Cambridge Energy Research Associates energy conference in Houston that Gazprom plans to become a major LNG supplier (OGJ, Feb. 20, 2006, p. 30).
