HOUSTON, July 17 -- Signet Energy Inc., a unit of Surge Global Energy Inc., San Diego, and operator of the Sawn Lake Oil Sands Development in Alberta, has received government approval to drill the next three vertical and horizontal wells in the Bluesky formation of the Sawn Lake area.

"Signet has secured the necessary rigs, equipment, and work crews," said Surge Global Energy Chief Executive and Chairman David Perez. The company plans to drill and test the three wells over the next 5 months, he said, as it moves closer to production testing.

The Sawn Lake area covers 44,480 acres with 820 million-1.2 billion bbl of 10-13º oil in place. The area has produced oil for more than 25 years from the Upper Devonian Slave Point formation.

Signet was conducting a production test of the first horizontal well drilled in the Sawn Lake area. That well, which also targeted the Bluesky formation, was drilled vertically to 680 m, plugged back, drilled 600 m laterally, and cased. It encountered more than 40 ft of oil pay and indicated a substantial gas concentration. Core analysis from the vertical well confirmed an average porosity of 32% and permeability of about 4 darcys (OGJ Online, Jan. 20, 2006).
