HOUSTON, July 11 -- ATP Oil & Gas Corp. and ExxonMobil Corp., joint owners of the Grand Isle 9A production facility in the Gulf of Mexico, have confirmed a July 8 flash fire in which a worker was killed.

The platform was shut-in for repairs when the incident happened. There were two third-party independent contractors on the platform. Both were evacuated from the site, one with no injuries and one who received medical attention before dying.

The fire has been extinguished and the platform is secure, the partners said. "There is no threat to public safety or to the environment. There also are no known spills," they said.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire. Operations will remain suspended pending the outcome.
