HOUSTON, May 26 -- Drilling activity in the US and Canada continued to rise the week ended May 26, said Baker Hughes Inc., with 68 more rotary rigs working than during the previous week. The 1,974 total active rigs represent 372 more than the same time last year.

US drilling, up for the fifth consecutive week, increased by a total of 10 rigs to 1,649—with most of the activity onshore. Texas, the most active state, gained 5 rigs for a total of 740 units working, while Oklahoma added 5 rigs to 182. Wyoming added 2. The counts in Louisiana, New Mexico, and California dropped by 2 units each.

Offshore drilling was down by 4 units to 99 from 103 the previous week. Two rigs were added in inland waters, however, for a total of 24 working.

Canada's weekly rig count swelled by 58 to 325 rigs working, up from 271 a year ago.
