HOUSTON, May 18 -- A consortium led by Repsol YPF SA has drilled and tested another gas discovery on the Reggane North Permit covering 8,566 sq km in Blocks 351c-352c in Algeria's Sahara Desert.

This discovery follows the group's announcement in April that two Reggane basin wells tested Lower Devonian gas. The RG-5 delineation well flowed at an initial rate of 636,000 cu m/day, and the SLI-1 exploration well achieved an initial rate of 100,000 cu m/day (OGJ, May 8, 2006, Newsletter).

The latest discovery, the KL-2 exploration well, is on an isolated structure called Kahlouche. The well was drilled to a depth of 3,983 m in the Lower Devonian (Siegenian) and produced at an initial rate of 763,000 cu m/day on a 32/64-in. choke with 4,081 psi wellhead pressure.

KL-2 also tested gas at 2,360 m in the Carboniferous (Tournasian) at an initial flow rate of 483,000 cu m/day on a 32/64-in. choke with 2,649 psi wellhead pressure. This is the basin's Carboniferous gas strike.

The consortium, consisting of block operator Repsol YPF 33.75%, RWE Dea 22.50%, Edison 18.75%, and Algeria's Sonatrach 25%, is currently acquiring an additional 650 line-km of 2D seismic data in the basin.
