HOUSTON, May 10 -- A group led by GDF Britain Ltd. plans to test an indicated new field discovery that one participant said extends the northern limit of gas bearing sands in the UK North Sea southern gas basin.

The Cygnus 44/12-2 well "encountered a number of gas bearing zones in the Rotliegendes and Carboniferous," the Gaz de France subsidiary said.

Cygnus could start production by mid-2008 if deemed commercial by the end of 2006. The well, northwest of Hawksley gas field, went to TD 11,870 ft measured depth (11,564 ft true vertical depth) in 20 m of water 170 km off Lincolnshire.
