Chevron approves deepwater gulf oil pipeline

Chevron USA Inc. has approved the construction of a 55-mile deepwater oil pipeline for its Tahiti project in the Gulf of Mexico.

HOUSTON, May 18 -- Chevron USA Inc. has approved the construction of a 55-mile deepwater oil pipeline for its Tahiti project in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company also approved expanding the pipeline from an initially planned 20-in. to 24-in. diameter to handle 300,000 b/d of oil and accommodate additional discoveries in the Walker Ridge and Green Canyon areas.

Amberjack Pipeline co. LLC will lay the pipeline in 4,200 ft of water from the Tahiti platform under construction on Green Canyon Block 641 to the Amberjack pipeline system and other pipelines on Green Canyon Block 19. Chevron Pipe Line Co. and Shell Pipe Line Co. LP will own equal shares.

Tahiti, operated by Chevron, is scheduled to start production in 2008 and is expected to achieve maximum flow rates of 125,000 b/d of oil and 70 MMcfd of gas.
