HOUSTON, May 12 -- A group led by Tullow Oil PLC, Dublin, started gas production on May 9 from Bangora field on Block 9 southeast of Dhaka.

The flow, stabilized at 50 MMcfd of gas on long-term test, is part of an appraisal program to test the size and connectivity of the reservoir discovered by the Bangora and Lalmai wells in late 2004 (OGJ Online, Dec. 13, 2004). The Ashuganj-Bakhrabad pipeline ships the much-needed gas to the local market.

The group, which is monitoring reservoir and geological data from the producing well, in February completed a 3D seismic survey over the 25-mile Bangora-Lalmai structure, and it spudded the Bangora-2 appraisal well on Apr. 22. It plans one more appraisal well and two contingent wells.

If drilling and seismic results are positive, the group plans to declare commerciality and submit a full field development plan to state-owned Petrobangla by yearend.

Block 9 interests are Tullow 30%, Niko Resources Ltd., Calgary, 60%, and Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration & Production Ltd. 10%.
