HOUSTON, Apr. 7 -- Seasonal decreases in Canadian rotary rig activity retired another 156 rigs the week ended Apr. 7, leaving 269 working in Canada, reported Baker Hughes Inc. That number, nevertheless, is 39 more than were active in Canada the same period last year.
US development projects required a total of 3 additional rigs drilling last week, raising the states' total to 1,579 rigs active—up 250 from the same time a year ago.
Five rigs were added in the Gulf of Mexico, while the total number of rigs working onshore decreased by 1, as did those in inland waters.
Oklahoma led onshore gainers with 4, to 172 working; Texas added 3, to total 717; and Louisiana gained 2, to 184 drilling. New Mexico pulled 3 rigs for a total of 95 working, and California, Colorado, and Wyoming each retired 1.
