HOUSTON, Mar. 10 -- The recent decline in US drilling appeared to be bottoming out, with this week's count up by 1 unit to 1,532 compared with 1,282 working rigs during the same period last year, said Baker Hughes Inc. Mar. 10.

Offshore operations accounted for the increase, up by 4 rotary rigs to 89 in US waters overall, including a gain of 2 to 84 in the Gulf of Mexico.

That was partially offset by the lost of 3 land rigs with 1,419 still working. Inland water activity was unchanged with 24 rigs working.

Texas witnessed the biggest increase of 8 rigs to 688 working. New Mexico was up by 1 to 99. Oklahoma, California, and Alaska were unchanged with respective rig counts of 169, 32, and 10. Colorado suffered the biggest decline of 5 rotary rigs to 76 making hole. Louisiana was down by 3 to 183. Wyoming lost 2 for a total of 93.

Canada's rig count inched up by 2 units to 690 working this week, up from 441 a year ago.
