HOUSTON, Mar. 20 -- Woodside Natural Gas Inc. plans to deliver Australian LNG to California with a system requiring no onshore terminal.

It said its proposed OceanWay Secure Energy project would use specially designed ships to deliver gas into an underwater buoy 28 miles off Los Angeles. The system would require no offshore platform.

Gasification of the LNG would begin aboard the ships, Woodside said. Gas would flow from the buoy through a subsea pipeline to a proposed connection with the Southern California Gas Co. system in an industrial area near Los Angeles International Airport. The company described onshore receiving facilities as "minimal."

It has begun seeking permits.
