HOUSTON, Mar. 13 -- ConocoPhillips plans to temporarily shut-in oil and gas production from the Greater Ekofisk Area in the Norwegian North Sea.

It expects the action, which it reported to the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority, to affect total production of 1.6 million boe (560,000 boe net to ConocoPhillips) from Ekofisk and connected fields, Valhall, Hod, Ula, Tambar, and Gyda.

ConocoPhillips said in a statement that the temporary production halt is for unscheduled equipment modifications and maintenance "designed to ensure continued safe and reliable operations."

The fields produce an average of 400,000 boe/d.
