US drilling shows slight increase

US drilling activity increased slightly with 1,467 rotary rigs working this week, 3 more than the previous week and up from 1,258 in the same period last year.

HOUSTON, Jan. 13 -- US drilling activity increased slightly with 1,467 rotary rigs working this week, 3 more than the previous week and up from 1,258 in the same period last year.

Land operations accounted for all of the gain, adding 6 rigs this week for a total of 1,371. Offshore drilling decreased by 2 rigs to 78 working US waters, including a decline of 1 to 74 in the Gulf of Mexico. Inland waters drilling activity declined by 1 rig to 18.

Canada's rig count increased by 80 units to 674, up from 548 last year.
