HOUSTON, Jan. 26 -- Statoil ASA has let a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract to Aker Kværner Engineering & Technology for a production platform at Gjøa field in the North Sea. The contract is worth 60 million kroner ($9 million).

Field development will be based on subsea wells tied back to a semisubmersible production facility in 680 m of water.

Statoil hopes to start production from the field in 2010 and might submit a development and operation plan to Norwegian authorities this year.

Einar Erfjord, head of the Gjøa steering committee, called it "a demanding project with marginal profitability."

Discovered in 1989, Gjøa lies in Blocks 35/9 and 36/7 about 70 km north of Troll gas field. It has estimated recoverable reserves of 60 million bbl of oil and condensate and 35 billion standard cu m of gas.

The partners are Gaz de France Norge 30%, Petoro AS 30%, Statoil 20%, Royal Dutch Shell PLC 12%, and RWE Dea Norway 8%.

Statoil is the field's development operator. Gaz de France is to be operator for the production phase.
