Coastal Petroleum Co., Apalachicola, Fla., spudded a Mississippian Lodgepole reef exploratory well 12 miles northwest of Chinook in Blaine County near the western edge of the Williston basin.

HOUSTON, Jan. 17 -- Coastal Petroleum Co., Apalachicola, Fla., spudded a Mississippian Lodgepole reef exploratory well 12 miles northwest of Chinook in Blaine County near the western edge of the Williston basin.

The well, in 15-35n-18e on a lease held by shallow gas production, is projected to Lodgepole at 5,100 ft and has interim objectives in four other formations including Bakken. The nearest productive Lodgepole reef lies 120 miles to the east in Valley County, Montana.

Coastal Petroleum, a unit of Coastal Caribbean Oils & Minerals Ltd., holds more than 100,000 acres in Montana and 25,000 acres in North Dakota.
