HOUSTON, Jan. 27 -- A group led by Denbury Resources Inc., Dallas, gauged an apparently large Miocene discovery at a deep test in Gibson field in northern Terrebonne Parish.

The Westervest-2 well went to TD 19,346 ft and "logged significant pay in the primary Rob L objective," said PetroQuest Energy Inc., Lafayette, La., which has a 25% working interest in the well. PetroQuest said the well is geologically similar to the 1999 Etoufee discovery at the nearby Turtle Bayou/Kent Bayou structural complex.

Denbury said the well should go on production within 60 days. PetroQuest said flow rates from the first well should be 10-15 MMcfe/d initially and 30 MMcfe/d after a facilities upgrade and that several delineation wells will be needed to fully define the field.

Denbury said preliminary internal estimates indicate proved reserves of 2 million bbl of oil equivalent net to the company's 29% net revenue interest. It said the Gumbo prospect "could have substantially more reserves than can currently be considered proven, perhaps up to eight times as much."

Howard Energy Co., private Traverse City, Mich., independent, and Reef Exploration Inc., private Richardson, Tex., independent, also hold interests in the well.
