US drilling declines by 31 rigs

US drilling activity fell by 31 units to 1,460 rotary rigs working this week, up from 1,245 during the same period last year.

HOUSTON, Dec. 2 -- US drilling activity fell by 31 units to 1,460 rotary rigs working this week, up from 1,245 during the same period last year.

Land drilling accounted for most of the loss, down by 28 rigs to 1,360 still active. Inland waters activity was unchanged with 22 rigs working. Offshore drilling was down by 3 rigs to 74 in the Gulf of Mexico and 78 in US waters overall.

Texas suffered the biggest loss, down 13 rigs to 658 working. Louisiana's rig count dropped by 10 to 171. Colorado lost 4 rigs to 83. Three states lost 2 rigs each, down to 147 in Oklahoma, 87 in New Mexico, and 10 in Alaska. Wyoming increased by 1 unit to 88 rigs. California was unchanged at 30.

Canada's rig count increased by 22 to 653 rotary rigs this week, up from 459 a year ago.
