HOUSTON, Nov. 07 -- Petroleum Development Oman has let an engineering, procurement, and commissioning contract to Petrofac Ltd., Woking, UK, for the second phase of an enhanced oil recovery project that is part of the development of the cluster of oil fields near Harweel in southern Oman (OGJ Online, Aug. 27, 2004).

The nearly $1 billion contract will be executed over 3 years through Petrofac's Engineering & Construction division in Sharjah, UAE, and in conjunction with Galfar, an Omani engineering and construction company.

Petrofac is responsible for project management, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, precommissioning, training, and support during commissioning of an oil and gas processing station in the Harweel cluster with a gas enrichment and sweetening plant, and associated facilities of 10,000 cu m/day of oil production capacity. Also, for facilities for 5 million cu m/day gas injection into Zalzala oil field, additional gathering facilities, gas depletion facilities at Rabab field, and modifications to the existing Harweel processing station.

The contract also gives PDO an option for an additional 10 million cu m/d of gas injection into Sakhiya oil field, additional gathering facilities, expansion of the depletion facilities at Rabab, and expansion of the Harweel processing station to increase overall capacity to 20,000 cu m/day of oil. This option would increase the total contract value.

The first phase of the Harweel development was completed in the first quarter of 2004. This has enabled early production of 2,000 cu m/day of oil. The overall development program is set to increase Oman's oil production over the next 10 years.
