HOUSTON, Aug. 16 -- Reliance Industries Ltd., Mumbai, has told authorities it has established the presence of 3.7 tcf of coalbed methane in place in east-central India.

The deposits are on the Sohagpur East and West blocks along the line between Madhya Pradesh and newly formed Chhattisgarh State, said the director general of hydrocarbons (see map, OGJ, Dec. 13, 2004, p. 34). Reliance Industries holds 100% interest in the blocks, which cover 500 sq km each.

Reliance, which had drilled 29 wells on the blocks, plans to drill 20 more well to firm up commerciality, the director said. Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani told the firm's annual meeting in early August that it could develop the blocks within 4-5 years.
