Drilling slips in US, rises in Canada

US drilling activity slipped from a 19-year high this week, down by 7 rotary rigs to 1,429 working, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Aug. 12. That compares with 1,232 rigs working in the same period a year ago.

HOUSTON, Aug. 12 -- US drilling activity slipped from a 19-year high this week, down by 7 rotary rigs to 1,429 working, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Aug. 12. That compares with 1,232 rigs working in the same period a year ago.

The biggest loss was in offshore drilling, down by 4 rigs to 101 in US waters, including the loss of 3 to 98 in the Gulf of Mexico. Activity in inland waters was down by 2 units to 22. Land operations lost 1 rig, with 1,306 still working.

Canada's rig count increased by 22 units to 579 working this week, up sharply from 357 a year ago.
