HOUSTON, May 27 -- National Iranian Oil Co. (NIOC) managing director Mehdi Mirmoezzi told news media May 24 that appraisal operations currently are under way in Ramin oil field in northeastern Ahvaz and in the gas layer of Balal oil field, following completion of exploration operations. The appraisals will help determine reservoir boundaries as well as the fields' oil and gas reserves, Mirmoezzi said.

Persian-language newspaper Eqtesad-e Pouya quoted Mirmoezzi as saying that Ramin oil field reserves are estimated at 5.7 billion bbl of crude and that the field is capable of producing 885 million bbl.

Eqtesad-e Pouya reported that Ramin currently is producing 2,000 b/d from its Asmari layer, and NIOC's new exploration data indicate that the field is capable of producing as much as 80,000-90,000 b/d.

Ramin also is believed to contain as much as 242 billion cu m of gas, of which 36 billion cu m are recoverable.

The newly discovered gas layer of Balal oil field is the eastern extension of Iran's South Pars gas field. Recoverable reserves in the layer are estimated at 168 billion cu m of gas and 183 million bbl of condensate.
