US drilling continues to waffle at high level

US drilling activity continued to waffle just below a 19-year high, with 1,282 rotary rigs working this week, 8 les than the previous week but up from 1,134 a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Mar. 11.

HOUSTON, Mar. 11 -- US drilling activity continued to waffle just below a 19-year high, with 1,282 rotary rigs working this week, 8 less than the previous week but up from 1,134 a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Mar. 11.

A continued decline in offshore drilling led the latest loss, down by 6 units to 93 rigs working in US ocean waters overall, including a loss of 3 to 89 in the Gulf of Mexico. Land drilling was down by 2 rigs to 1,161 working this week. Inland waters activity was unchanged at 28 rigs.

Canada's rig count plunged by 152 to 441 rigs working. That's down from 521 during the same period a year ago.
