HOUSTON, Mar. 4 -- US drilling activity rebounded up by 9 units from the previous week to 1,290 rotary rigs working this week, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Mar. 4. That's up from 1,129 active rigs in the same period a year ago.

Land operations accounted for all of the latest gain, up by 15 rigs, with 1,163 working. Inland-water activity was unchanged with 28 rotary rigs at work. Offshore drilling was down, however, by 7 rigs to 92 in the Gulf of Mexico but only by 6 rigs to 99 in US waters as a whole.

Canada's rig count dipped by 24 units to 593 rigs making hole, up from 556 a year ago.
